LA PAGODE

Author: Tabita Sīmane0 COMMENTS

LA PAGODE

La Pagode, one of the secret gems of Paris, is also the most unusual movie theatre in the city. Constructed in the early 1900s, the Japanese pagoda-style building was the BonMarche department store manager's birthday present to his wife; it was built on the plot adjoining to their house. Originally the pagoda was used to host parties; when the couple divorced, it became available for rent, was used to various ends and finally transformed into a cinema in the 1930s. A backyard extension was built to house the projector room; the beautiful windows were blacked out with simple wood panels. During the 1950s and 1960s, La Pagode was no more than an ordinary neighbourhood cinema running re-runs of old movies; the early 1970s saw it turned into an art house film theatre while retaining the same old-fashioned design. Later an additional auditorium was built in the basement; the fence was brought down to reveal the building and garden; a new modern lobby was constructed and the main auditorium underwent some excellently executed renovation work. Having gained a second wind, the film theatre is now running screenings of the latest European films.
