STUDIO 28

The small Studio 28 in Montmartre, located within spitting distance from Moulin Rouge, caught wider public attention thanks to the fact that it was used as the setting for one of the episodes of the French romantic comedy Amélie. Opened in 1928 in the building of an abandoned cabaret, Studio 28 soon became a popular hangout for the artsy young crowd, a fact signified, among other things, by the auditorium's lighting fixtures designed by none other than Jean Cocteau. When the film theatre changed its owners in 1932, the focus shifted to the American cinema, including the films by the Marx Brothers, hitherto unknown in France. After the war Studio 28 changed hands again, now becoming the family business of two brothers; one of them operated the movie projector, their mother manned the box office and both wives worked as ushers. Hard times came to Studio 28 in the 1980s; however, the financial support of the municipality of Paris was enough to renovate and modernise the premises. Today, while retaining its quaint charm, the old theatre features Dolby sound, a wide screen, air conditioning, 170 comfortable seats and a nice garden restaurant.
