Le Grand Vefoir, Midnight in Paris (2011)

Located in the gardens of the Palais Royal, which was built as a home to Cardinal Richelieu, Le Grand Vefoir opened its doors in 1760 and has seen such visitors as Napoleon, Victor Hugo, Jean Cocteau and Colette, who incidentally passed away in one of the adjacent properties. Small wonder that Hollywood genius Woody Allen chose this location for his hero Gil's first dinner in Paris, together with his fiancée Inez and her rich, conservative parents.

Despite the opulent 18th-century interior, with its ornate gilt mirrors and chandeliers, and despite the restaurant's two Michelin stars, the conversation at the table does not go very well. The bride's father, a strict Republican, dislikes French politics and they barely manage to discuss the upcoming wedding. However, just after this dinner, Gil's 'travel in a time machine' begins - with Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway and others forming part of Gil's adventures in 1920s Paris.
