Marga Schoeller Bücherstube

The founder and - begging your pardon - soul of the bookstore Marga Schoeller has become a legend of Berlin, of Berlin bookshops and bookshops in general. Unless otherwise occupied, the lady herself can usually be found at the store, in the back room where books on history and other sorts of specialist literature are stored, and heard speaking on the phone in a loud and slightly husky voice. It seems that whenever I happen to visit the place, the conversation is in English and the person on the other end is speaking from somewhere in the US. I normally tend to visit the store in a great hurry with the intention of locating a recently published book in English, and I have always found what I have been looking for (that doesn't mean that the store carries only English books). It may be just my imagination, but I seem to remember Marga as not only being constantly on the phone but also chain-smoking.
