3 Frakkar

3 Frakkar, a restaurant serving traditional Icelandic cuisine, hidden in the depths of a Reykjavík residential district, offers an extensive menu of seafood dishes. The greatest pride and value of the restaurant is its majestic delicacy – whale meat, as well as sea bird meat and lamb, a must-taste for any visitor to Iceland.
The cosy, perhaps slightly tired and old fashioned rooms gather people of all walks of life and different social statuses; the fact makes for a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere. After all, what motivates people to frequent 3 Frakkar is the wish to enjoy seafood prepared in the traditional Icelandic way.
The most famous of the restaurant's delicacies – whale meat – is served in two ways: Hrár Hvalur Sasimi að japönskum sið (raw whale meat, Japanese sashimi style), and Hvalkjöts piparsteik með piparsósu (whale pepper steak in pepper sauce). Whale meat is impossible to compare to any other food – and why should it be compared? It is excellent in itself. The smoked meat of puffin – listed on the menu as Reyktur Lundi með sinnepssósu (smoked puffin breast with mustard sauce) – is equally delicious, and the traditional Icelandic lamb steak has been acclaimed as the best available worldwide – the climate, the salty air, and the proximity of the sea are what make it extra special.
The restaurant defines its price policy as moderate, and offers its visitors a less expensive menu as an alternative.

I visited 3 Frakkar in the late 90's and had whale and puffin. Reykjavik restaurants are generally fabulous. 3 Frakkar was exactly as described, more a cafe than a fancy restaurant but the food was excellent, the atmosphere very relaxed. You are made to feel very welcome. None of the pomposity that some of the fancier Reykjavik restaurants can show. Would thoroughly recommend
