Rialto Market

Quite possibly the best way to start the day in Venice (unless it's a Sunday or a Monday) is visiting the Rialto market. Ideally, you should make it a very early Saturday morning when it offers the perfect opportunity to see the real city, alive and vibrating, not the Venice of picture postcards. You will see it breathing in its own natural tempo, its permanent residents going about their daily business. The most legendary spot in the market is the fish pavilion where you can buy a huge variety of inhabitants of the Adriatic Sea and more distant waters: giant swordfish almost the size of a human, tuna... Sicilian prawns that can be eaten raw - their meat is so tender that it literally melts in the mouth. The small adjacent cafés make good use of everything that can be bought at the market, preparing great food on the spot. The nearby fruit and vegetable pavilion mostly sells seasonal produce grown in neighbouring islands, for instance, Sant'Erasmo, also known as „the vegetable garden of Venice".
