Boqueria Market

Boqueria Market

The Boqueria Market (Mercat de la Boqueria) in Barcelona is a legendary place, and lunch in one of its central eating spots is an almost obligatory city ritual. Although the most reputable eatery is El Quim, one may just as well have a meal at any other - as everything on your plate will be fresher than fresh, coming from the nearby market stalls. As at any market, there is lots of bustle and a free stool at the food counter may be difficult to find. However, this all belongs to the atmosphere of the place and heightens the enjoyment. The crowd is a motley crew made up of locals and tourists and there is no particular formality here. Everything is loud, simple and with no special attention given to anyone. At the same time, everything seems to be done here with love and joy - even the way in which the napkin is tossed to you on the counter or the wine glass is moved into place. And the more uncomfortable the stool and the less room there is at the counter, the more glorious the food - fantastic razor clams, squid and other seafood dishes. True, in spite of the pedestrian entourage and market atmosphere, be prepared to pay for it - while the food is not overly expensive, it is also not very cheap. Do explore the market itself, which was first mentioned as early as 1217, when tables with meat for sale were placed near the city gates. However, the market gained official status only in 1826, with a special edifice built to house it in 1840. The fish pavilion was opened in 1911, while the metal roof construction that still exists today was erected in 1914.
