Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia

Author: Margarita Zieda0 COMMENTS

Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia

The Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava's futuristic white concrete, metal and glass miracle, slightly reminiscent of a giant whale, hides a hyper-modern multi-functional musical cathedral featuring four stages (one of them located underground), facilities for simultaneous translation of the libretto into eight languages and an acoustic equipment that allows the sound to be channelled into the preferred direction. Inaugurated in 2005 with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Fidelio, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia is the largest opera house in Europe. Every summer, the opera house hosts the annual Festival del Mediterráneo, a celebration of opera featuring appearances by the world's greatest singers, conductors and musicians.
