Daylesford Organic shops, established by Lady Carole Bamford and her husband Sir Anthony, are much loved among organic food devotees, yet their farm set in Cotswolds hills, Gloucestershire, is another Slow Food destination never to be missed. Like Bamford's Staffordshire estate, it's a working farm that supplies their shops and restaurants with fresh, organic products.
Daylesford Organic philosophy lies in 100% clean and natural methods of production. No pesticides, antibiotics or growth stimulators are used in cattle breading or vegetable growing. More than 100 years old breeds of cattle and poultry are still kept, and the variety of products available is just fantastic! Bakery alone uses at least 25 sorts of flour, stored in big buckets lined up neatly under the working table. And that is not all yet! Daylesford Organic handmade Cheddar has won numerous awards during 5 years since it was first created. Not for nothing 1 kilo of this unique masterpiece costs 17 £! Moreover, it is matured in impressive, a couple of hundred years old barns. The restaurant too is set up in an old farmhouse, and it seems hard to believe that such a refined gourmet destination hides in a remote Gloucestershire neighborhood like this. Daylesford Organic appears to be a small kingdom that does not lack anything - they have their own bees and honey even! Lamb, venison, beef, wild turkey, chicken, vegetables, and dairy products - everything is fresh and locally produced, and no products that are served on the table have traveled around the world. Moreover, menu changes every day, and anything you taste there (bread, cheese, etc.), you can buy and take home as well.
Just don't get scared away by slight manure "aroma" that you may sense upon arrival - it's a part of the countryside's charm, of course! At least, local showbiz stars, like Kate Moss, Raymond Blanc and Kate Winslet, have never fled so far. The restaurant is sited on two floors, and a basket of fresh strawberries awaits you at the entrance. Both the ground floor shop and a bakery and the first floor restaurant are clad in white marble, much the same as their counterparts in London. A summer garden is fit out with trendy furniture, and on a sunny day you can spoil yourself with some barbecue as well.
The huge territory houses a store, offering everything for horticulture - pots and buckets, spades and leather aprons, organic seeds and much more. Yet if you seek for more enjoyment, look for Bamford Hay Barn Spa. Yes, that's right - a massage in the middle of nowhere!
