While Odeon Leicester Square is, of course, one of London's largest film theatres, the place owes its great popularity to the film premieres and award ceremonies it hosts on a regular basis. The cinema, designed by the architects Harry Weedon and Andrew Mather, was built in the 1930s, replacing the Alhambra Theatre and becoming the flagship theatre of the Odeon chain. The cinema featuring black granite panels on the façade and the famous faux-leopard skin seats in the auditorium was opened in 1937 with a screening of The Prisoner of Zenda. Over the years, the theatre has undergone countless transformations; only the sculpted „flying ladies" on the walls and the ceiling lighting fixtures, as well as the five-manual organ (played on special occasions only) have been retained from the original interior. Every year the Odeon hosts a Royal Film Performance - a tradition dating from the post-war years; the unique charity event sees the ruling monarch or another member of the Royal Family attend a film premiere; the rest of the public pay huge sums to be present at the premiere, and all proceeds are donated to charity. The Odeon is also a popular venue for the world and European premieres of movies by significant filmmakers - a fact that explains the almost weekly sight of excited crowds awaiting the arrival of their favourite screen stars.
