Royal Opera House

The range of opera productions staged at London's Royal Opera may undergo certain transformations in autumn 2011when the post of its artistic director is taken over by the unconventional and diverse Danish stage director Kasper Holten who stood at the head of the Royal Danish Opera for eleven years, having been appointed to the office at the tender age of twenty-seven. Holten is quite familiar to the Latvian opera-goers: the beginning of the new millennium saw him stage Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte at the Latvian National Opera.
So far, it was usually the great voices of the singers and - particularly - the conductors that made a night spent at Covent Garden's Royal Opera an artistic experience as well as an exciting adventure of visiting a truly historical building. It was never the directors whose invariably conservative style has been defining the intellectual and artistic features of the British Royal Opera.
The Guardian Newspaper has expressed certain hope that Kasper Holten's leadership may perhaps inject some new energy into the singers' theatre that is Covent Garden's Royal Opera, adding a new dimension and opening it to some fresh and even venturesome productions.
