The restaurant at the Royal Academy of Arts first opened its doors in 1885 as Norman Show's Refreshment Room. Now, in 2011, it has experienced its third makeover in the history of its existence obtaining an entirely new image created by the British designer Tom Dixon. In a way, its new décor serves as a continuation of exhibitions hosted by the Royal Academy of Arts. It possesses the grandeur and elegance of the Academy itself, built in the 18th century. A centerpiece of the interior is an impressive glass showcase, which displays sculptures and busts of the Academy's permanent collection, the oldest ones dating back to 1897. Also other significant artifacts have now emerged from the Academy's depositary and are available for public viewing. The restaurant's dining zone is divided into areas that each has been inspired by famous masters, for example, J.M.W Turner. The bar is made of lava from Etna volcano and handmade bricks. The restaurant features mostly Italian, French and Spanish cuisine while a waiter, an elderly gentleman with silvery hair, seems exuding innate elegance and dignity, passed from one generation to another. The restaurant is open daily from 10.00 to 18.00 and offers breakfast menu and the legendary British afternoon tea as well. On Friday and Saturday nights, one can have a meal there, even though the museum itself is already closed.
