There are three things that make the Senator Theatre a legend. Firstly, it does not admit children under the age of five and offers a special sound-proof day-care centre. Secondly, it has hosted countless world premieres (there is an adjacent banquet hall next door to the projection room). Thirdly, it has 'played the role' of a movie theatre in many films, including Twelve Monkeys and Avalon. The Art Deco edifice, built in 1939, was designed by the architect John J. Zink who specialised in movie theatres. In 2010 the picture house was closed down for a short time; a few months later, a new owner was found by the Baltimore City Council and the movie theatre was duly re-opened.
