CASTRO THEATRE

CASTRO THEATRE

The imposing building of the Castro Theatre - a 1922 Spanish Renaissance-style edifice featuring Moorish and Art Deco elements - is one of the best-known structures in San Francisco. Opulence, magnificence and a fine organ - in all, a classical example of the interbellum film palace, now a true rarity. The fact that the theatre is located on the intersection of Castro and Market Streets, one of the most popular gay districts in the USA, has left its impact on the choice of the repertory: while the cinema does run screenings of contemporary mainstream and indie films, the focus is on silent movies and the classical age of Hollywood with its divas.
