Isla Margarita-Isla Coche

Author: Renārs Bīrmanis0 COMMENTS

***** Thanks to its smooth flat water, Isla Coche is much favored among kiteboarders. I would not recommend it to total beginners, however. Constant offshore wind means that a slightest slip - and you need a water taxi to help you out. Isla Coche is a great spot for mastering new tricks on a massive slider or kickers. Days pass by in a total chill-out as lonely walks are the only other entertainment, except kiting.

***Isla Margarita - El Yaque beach. Only 1/5 of the beach is given to kite boarding during the daytime (upwind from a windsurf area) or else you can enjoy kite boarding before 9.00 a.m. or after 5.00 p.m. - entire beach is at your disposal then. Learners are advised to hire an instructor with a boat to avoid unnecessary clashes with windsurfers. El Yaque is famous for its vibrant nightlife and beach-bars, although it might be somewhat difficult to find common language with windsurfers who make up about 80% of public - guys with an attitude as it often proves. The best kitesurfing season at Isla Margarita is in spring. Yet, if time and wallet allows, I'd suggest spending some time at Los Roques Islands (about one hour flight from Margarita Island) too, featuring amazingly beautiful lagoon and constant wind. The only disadvantages are dubious local flights safety and general costliness on the island.

Summing up:
+ The best time for kitesurfing is March to June;
+ Pleasant weather; water temperature around 26°C;
+ Good wind conditions (typical kite sizes 9-11m²);
+ Well developed tourism infrastructure;
+ Tax-free country, low prices.

- High level proficiency required;
- Masses of medusas;
- Pricy hotels and high travel expenses;
- Limited choice of windless weather activities (no surfing spots).
